The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
Anne Brontë
Gilbert is entering his a-man-written-by-a-woman era, like that's some high-quality yearning he did in this one.
Absolutely underrated, and my favourite Brontë so far. Unexepectedly progressist, and Helen Graham has been elevated to one of my favourite book character of all time. I just loved how whole she felt, and just wanted her to be happy.
Even as an atheist, the discussion of Christian value was not overwhelming, and was essential to some aspects of the characters’ actions and feelings.
Gilbert was very refreshing male protagonist — and I feel like he is what people imagine Heathcliff to be. He does some insane stuff, but is actually respectful of Helen’s wishes and feelings, and to be honest, I liked how intense he was.
I will finish with a word on the prose ; I don’t know what was in the water at Haworth, but this is on the same level as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. It does slightly drags on in some places, but this is infinitesimal.
