Is this basically the same as Evelyn Hugo?? That's the vibes I'm currently getting.

To be honest I did not think I would like this as much as I do but I am just flying through the pages.

i'm a huge fan of historical fic that spans a person's lifetime and/or multiple generations so i loved this. character development isn't really there, but i was hooked on seeing where violeta's life took her. the writing is simple and easy to follow, and there are some lines throughout that are just so, so powerful and wonderfully written. this was my first read from allende and i'm definitely going to pick up more.

so so good. necessarily uncomfortable at times. as another review mentioned, this is so much more developed and nuanced than yellowface. at times ingrid frustrated me, but her character development is so satisfying to witness. it did take a bit for me to get really into this book, but then i couldn't put it down. chou's writing style is amazing, i'm a huge fan. highly recommend this book.

Excuse me? This was BRILLIANT!!! Why is it so underrated?
It’s a mix of “The Idiot” and a much, much, MUCH better developed and smarter version of “Yellowface” (which after reading this I now dislike even more).
Hilarious, genius, smart, fresh, unique, WONDERFUL!

What are some non-negotiable history reads? Fiction and non-fiction!!

having a rough time of it mentally currently, my brain is really not being a fun place to be, so looking for some hopeful, rugged optimism, “i am gonna make it through this year if it kills me”-style books (quote is from ‘This Year’ by the mountain goats). preferably nonfiction, as that’s my favorite genre. bonus points if the recommendation involves queerness/transness, nature, or music :]
