Every school year, I try to make a love of reading visible in my classroom. I don’t assign reading outside of class as homework like reading logs, but I try to engage with it in a way that might make students choose it on their own.
By prepubescent ages, students usually have pretty set opinions about reading. A lot of it comes from feeling like they’re not good readers, that reading isn’t interesting, or that they would rather be doing literally anything else.
And I haven’t done this yet, but I like to do a check-in at the end of the year to see if those opinions shift, which will happen soon.
But I also want to know from all of you:
When did you become a reader? Were you always a reader as far back as you can remember? If it happened later, what changed it for you, a book, a phase, a moment?
For me, I can't remember a time I didn't have my nose in a book, outside of when life may have gotten a bit hectic. But, reading has always been an escape for me, a space for joy and wonder.

Y'all I cant with this book 😭 i have been skimming for pages - there is nothing I hate more and understand less than explicit sexual assault scenes. I read to escape the real world, not to have its worse parts replicated and described in excruciating detail. Why write passages that are so violating and disturbing when women around the world have been experiencing SA and oppression for millennia?
I wish I had dnfed after the first scene. Truly regrettably I chose this book for a quest and have been forcing myself through but its been so very uncomfortable and not enjoyable. I can't imagine that I'll be continuing this series.

Dramatic battles, tense political intrigue, unique world building...and is that maybe some romance I'm sensing? These books are not Romantasy but focus primarily on the SFF elements. Romance is a subplot and may not appear until later in the series, but when it does, you won't be disappointed.
