I was lucky enough to receive this as my first ARC and it did not disappoint. The story pulled me in right away and kept me hooked with a mix of action, magic, and layered character dynamics. It felt like a blend of familiar fantasy elements while still bringing something fresh to the table.
One of my favorite parts was how visual everything felt. The scenes were written in a way that made it easy to picture what was happening, especially during the more intense moments. I could genuinely see this being adapted into a movie or series.
The characters and their relationships really carried the story. I loved how different courts and backgrounds influenced alliances and tension. It added depth without making things confusing. The pacing also worked really well. Even with multiple plotlines, everything came together in a satisfying way by the end.
There were a few very minor errors, but nothing that took away from the experience, especially considering it is an ARC. The ending felt complete while still leaving room for a sequel, which I would absolutely pick up.
Overall, a really enjoyable fantasy read that balanced action, worldbuilding, and character development in a way that kept me invested the entire time.

What Iâve taken away from the first 1/5 of the book - Quasimodo had TB!! I digress - A LOT to take away from this book so far. Structure, flow, education, and comedy all working together really well to not make it dense.

This is a short but very impactful book that I think a lot of people would benefit from reading. Timothy Snyder presents it in a way that feels like a handbook, with clear and direct lessons on recognizing and resisting authoritarianism.
One of the things I liked most was how digestible it is. Even though the subject matter is heavy, the format makes it easy to follow and reflect on. I also really appreciated that the author includes additional reading recommendations throughout the book.
The structure is one of the only reasons I did not give this a full five stars. The book starts off very heavy with history and factual context, then shifts more into social and behavioral guidance. While the progression makes sense, I think it could have flowed better if those elements were more evenly balanced throughout.
I also found it interesting that the author avoids naming specific modern political figures. It makes the book feel more timeless and allows readers to apply the lessons more broadly to different situations.
Some of the most impactful parts for me were the discussions around community involvement, understanding what patriotism actually means, and how fear can influence behavior and decision making.
There were a couple of minor personal drawbacks, like a reference to J. K. Rowling that did not align with my values, but it was brief and did not take away from the overall message.
Overall this is a thoughtful, well written, and important read. It is short, accessible, and something I think many people would benefit from having on hand as a reference.
