the description of chu wanning's home reminds me of this line from one of 杨万里 yang wanli's poems: 接天莲叶无穷碧,映日荷花别样红。 / joining the sky, lotus leaves form an endless jade-green; reflecting the sun, lotus flowers glow a striking red.

apart from that, chu wanning seems like one of those typical immortals who deliberately keep themselves apart from secular matters, so i'm wondering if the name of his home might be linked to the buddhist term 火焰红莲 / to turn flames into a red lotus, or to turn desires into wisdom and intelligence. the idea is that a wise person will not be fettered by external objects, and therefore their heart will be clear and free of worries. desires, on the other hand, are brought about by a false heart, and make it very easy for someone to lose all rationality and reason. i believe the image of a lotus amidst flames is also a common metaphor for the rarity of something in daoism.

as for the lotus, it holds great significance in both buddhism and chinese literary tradition for being a flower renowned for its untouched purity despite growing in the filth of the muck, which is very chu wanning-coded imo. just look at his flawless white robes. anyway, there’s a a very famous song dynasty essay called 《爱莲说》 / on the love of the lotus by philosopher 周敦颐 zhou dunyi, which states that 予独爱莲之出淤泥而不染 / i love only the lotus that rises unsullied from the silt.

the line that chu wanning's willow-vine whip tianwen is supposed to make people think of comes from the famous leave-taking poem 《折杨柳》 / breaking off willow branches by tang dynasty poet 张九龄 zhang jiuling, which gives voice to the sorrow and reluctance of separation. the poem in turn refers to the tradition of 折柳送别 / to break off a willow branch as a farewell when sending someone on their way, representative of the sender’s reluctance to part from the one who is leaving.

this tradition originates from the city of chang’an in the han dynasty. when seeing guests off at the 灞桥 ba bridge—also known as the 情尽桥 / bridge where feelings are exhausted, the 断肠桥 / heartbreak bridge, and the 销魂桥 / bridge on which one is overwhelmed with emotion—it was traditional to break off a willow branch and gift it as a measure of one’s regard. eventually, it came to represent the act of sending someone on their way in general. the reason willow branches are used is because 柳 liu / willow is homophonous with 留 liu, a verb that implies asking someone to remain behind [with the asker]. also, since willows grow everywhere, they represent new life and hope after leave-taking.

anyway, the poem is as follows:

纤纤折杨柳, / slender and supple, a willow branch is broken off, 持此寄情人。 / and sent to a distant lover. 一枝何足贵, / what value can a single branch hold? 怜是故园春。 / it is cherished for holding a homeland's spring. 迟景那能久, / the evening light cannot be prolonged, 芳菲不及新。 / nor can the sweetness of flowers compare to their first bloom. 更愁征戍客, / greater worry do I hold for those garrisoned at the frontier; 容鬓老边尘。 / their likeness ages amidst the billowing dust there.

    (my trans.)

also, tianwen shares a name with a poem by the warring states poet 屈原 qu yuan, which is placed in the collection 《楚辞》 chuci / verses of chu, one of the more famous collections of pre-qin dynasty poetry.《天问》 tianwen / questions to the heavens was written as a series of questions to the heavens ranging from interrogations of chinese mythology to open debates of traditional beliefs, and demonstrated a desire to delve into the truth of the matter.

While I enjoyed this book and its gothic atmosphere, I think I went into it with too high of expectations that just weren’t met. I wanted horror, gore, something unique and different, and everything was a little too soft and “seen before” for me.

I really liked the overall story and how uncomfortable the book made me at times, either with the characters’ behaviors and actions towards others characters, or the direction the story would take and the way the plot would develop. It made the story shocking, most times not really expecting those things to happen, and it would change our perception of the characters. Even with expected plot twists, those were still told in an interesting way that matched the story’s flow.

The relationship between Roos and Agnes was interesting to read, even if very questionable. I wouldn’t consider this book or their relationship romantic whatsoever, with the way Roos, even being 21, still had a very childish mentally because of her trauma and Agnes being 15 years older, but their relationship was also very based on toxic co-dependency.

The case episodes were the most interesting part to me, and the one that grabbed my attention the most. These were integrated in the book in a way that made sense with Roos’ narration of her story and with these two always going hand in hand. If we learned something in the case episodes, either we would get a continuation of that in Roos’ narration or it would explain something previously mentioned.

I still think it was a pretty fun and interesting book to read, but I just wanted a little more from it.
