I dnfed this due to the pace, but I absolutely 10000% recommend the BBC/PBS tv adaptation of this book and it's sequel, it's a fucking delight.

Two dickweeds solve a mystery! Rory Kinnear is excellent as the narrator for this audiobook, making a purposefully unlikeable detective compelling, and adding fun and relatability to the likeable-but-he-has-some-issues main character.
Entertaining and well-paced. I like anything meta, so that aspect was fun for me. Some Dahl-esque mean descriptions of characters' physicality was not enjoyable, and I hope the author, in the next book, stops trying to squeeze in bits of his thoughts on cancel culture, causing reactions in me ranging from "I get it but I don't want to hear it from a Tory" to "wow, that sure was racist!" I also admit I wish the brilliant crime-solver wasn't a homophobic boor but I also realize that's the entire point and what makes him unexpected.
Those issues aside, it moved at a clip and entertained.
