“Isabel always had a dread of wasting compassion - a precious article worth more to the giver than to any one else”

I admit that this book is not for everyone. I started to read it many years ago and gave up. Coming back to it, it’s clear I am now ready for it. Definitely deserves a place as one of my favourite books of all time. It’s one of the best I have ever read

Incredibly drawn characters and exceptionally crafted prose. It tells the story of a young woman that turns the face of the classic romance. Isabel’s struggles with the American interpretation of freedom which contrasts with England’s tradition of livelihood. James asks us to question what it means to have autonomy. Does the ability to make decisions make us happier, or do other people have better influence on our judgement.

Despite unclear, murky, inconsistent desires, Isabel remains a respectable heroine, while also being thoroughly human. A perfect novel, if you try you must persevere, it’s has a rousing finish!
