I always get trigger warnings when I don’t need them (not to say that other people don’t, of course, they just don’t apply to me), but when I do need them, they’re not there. This book is not an easy read in the first 25% - it is cruel and horrific and sickening. I went into this book figuratively blindfolded so wasn’t aware of the explicit descriptions of abuse Native Canadian children went through in the colonisers attempts to ‘westernise’/make them more white/European, and as someone whose ancestors have experienced similar as Māori’s who were impacted by British colonial rule - it is difficult to read. We really all do have the same enemy, even now. If I knew what contents this book had, I definitely would’ve picked up something else. Not because this book is not worth reading (it is, 100%. I encourage any racist who spends their days making white supremacist edits and spreading prejudiced hate based on stereotypes to read this book), but because it’s heartbreaking reading time upon time these children were trying to be whitewashed and reminds me of what my own ancestors went through based on what has been passed through in my own family. We are all victims of colonial rule and still experience the aftermath of it today ):

Truly all the racists that are so prominent nowadays and saying they are being replaced or their country is being invaded I hate you all. Look what your ancestors were doing to the native people and trying to westernise them😭not only are you stupid fucks but you have no idea of how colonisation worked and how you didn’t conquer shit you just stole and invaded land that wasn’t yours and then tried to force these children to become more white. And then your descendants will say that they’re being invaded and their culture is being stolen. I am so sick of you inbred racist cracker bitches

I just hate white people sometimes man and oftentimes their descendants bc I feel as if a lot of these ppl complaining about migration and are being extremely racist on social media have ancestors who are colonisers or contributed to the genocide or financial distress of a minority. like what do you mean you kidnapped these children from their fucking homes to force them to become more white and fit more in with your western standards? You people and what you have done to indigenous communities disgust me. And yet ur descendants still have the nerve to complain about other cultures and migration like truly you will never find more insufferable people than 🍘this is so infuriating. (Also shouldn’t have to say this but this is only towards non racist white people)
