I love that this is not a monolith of a story and is paced fast enough that it continuously holds my interest. The world building in this tale, first and foremost, is so well done. I felt immersed right away, and upon learning about Lou's life I was immediately full of rage on her behalf. Born a twin, her father took her sister and her mother took her to live completely separate lives in the same town. Her mother and her are saltwitches, so of course they are outcast and seen as 'other.' Her mother was killed tragically before the book begins, and she has been on her own for a while. Her sister and father are more of the ... religious types. Either way, there is a legend at the very beginning of the book which describes a curse which falls upon the people of this kingdom, and Lou and her sister are integral to its prophecy. That's all I'm going to say about that.
Lou has endured a lot in her lifetime, and it seems that she will continue to face adversity and strife as we follow her on her journey to self-actualization. The Drowned King is something else entirely; I LOVED learning about his family's tidemarks and his mother's sacrifice for her people.
There is so much that happens in this book but it really sticks with you - it's a great read! Publishing Nov. 3, 2026.
