"Magdalen is absolutely stunning, rain or sunshine." "It's pronounced Maudlin-Maudlin College. If you're going to spend time here, you might as well say it correctly.”
this made me giggle! i just got back from my year abroad at oxford, and it’s so funny to see the university portrayed here, with all its pretentions and odd traditions. it’s always strange to see a place you know well in fiction. it almost feels like you and the author share a level of intimacy just from the in-knowledge of a setting in a way that comforts as much as unnerves me 🙃
interestingly, magdalen college is living evidence of the link between the two words, when her biblical character came to be known as one who was full of repentance and sorrow in the middle ages. thus, the shared pronunciation with a word that means sorrowful!

ultimately just wasn’t for me! the super short chapters pulled me out of the story, and as i am not a noir fan, i had a hard time identifying the lines between parody and sincerity in ways that caused the characters to grate. really enjoyed the neanderthal emails (a sentence i never thought i’d write) and sadie’s slippery perspective, but unfortunately they weren’t enough to make reading this much more than a slog.
