Highly recommend. A really fascinating combination of a memoir but also a series of essays on literature, writing, how we engage with children in this world, and life generally. Also very good reflections on mental illness, among other melancholy things. There are excerpts that will definitely stick with me for a long time.

It made me want to read more, write more, and just generally experience the world more. Also really, really sharply written - made me want to be a better writer.

Would have given it 5 stars, but unfortunately Handler’s occasional attempts at commentary on politics & cancel culture did not stick the landing. He attempted to offer a nuanced assessment, which I was quite open to, until it veered into becoming not nuanced at all and a little defensive. Attempting to tie the disparate essays together into an emotional conclusion at the end, he made what felt like a lazy BLM analysis that was more both sides-ism than it was inspiring. But I took this as more of a lack of proper political analysis chops than I did as a poor reflection of his politics, since he had other points of commentary in the book that were quite good. Regardless, these instances dampened the book a bit for me and could have been much sharper.

phenomenal. the exploration of loneliness & vulnerability I didn’t know I needed so deeply - and a fun combination of essay compilation/full book where each chapter is its own enclosed argument but they still speak to each other
