I grabbed the Signet Classic edition of this book off my in-laws bookshelf to bring on a camping trip. I have not read classics since high school (20 years ago!) and found it so difficult to read, especially Joseph’s speech. I was three chapters in and almost DNF’d but then decided to give reading out loud a try and found that to be so helpful to actually understand what is happening. Anyone else experience this?? Plus it doubles as a live audiobook for my husband to fall asleep to 😆

I read the original series in high school/college when they first came out and loved the books and the movies. Excited to reread them now over a decade later and read the new books for the first time!

I listened to the audiobook version of this book and learned so much about the world of geisha and the journey of becoming a geiko. Traditional Japanese and geisha culture is fascinating and I appreciate Mineko for her courage to break norms and share her story with the world. I love memoirs as a genre and found this book to be less compelling as a memoir, but if you are interested in the world of geisha and Gion Kobu through the lens of one of Japan’s most successful geiko, I recommend this book for you.
