Zoulfa Katouh never disappoints. This book was so vividly written that I felt every emotion alongside Jihad as she navigated a life shaped by grief, loss, betrayal, and found friendship.

The story explored themes of Islamophobia and diasporic alienation, both of which Jihad faced as a Syrian American living in New York. Jamie was easily one of my favorite characters. I loved his growth and how he acknowledged that staying silent was no different from siding with the oppressor and actively tried to change and become a better friend to Jihad. His presence throughout the book felt warm and comforting, reminding me that a single act of kindness can change someone’s perspective.

The ending fit the story well, although I wished we’d gotten a longer epilogue where we could see them a few years later.

This book has got to be one of the coziest books I’ve read this year; reading it felt like a warm hug. The author did a wonderful job with the characterization: four completely different personalities come together in one adventure, and it works! We got to see their character development—how they make compromises for one another and choose the friendship they build along the way.

I just wish the plot had more depth, since most of the time it felt as though their adventures were just side quests. The pacing also felt uneven, as the beginning was very slow while everything unfolded quickly in the final chapters. Nonetheless, this was a refreshing book to read, with a simple plot and no problematic or over-the-top characters.
