I think there was a lot to like with this one for me and I will probably still continue the series. I struggle with fantasy audiobooks at times but this one kept me pretty engaged. However I think I will enjoy it much more with a physical copy.
The story itself was pretty straightforward medieval fantasy imo. At times I felt like Fitz had a lot more help than people were making it sound, especially given discourse for this book makes it seem like he gets kicked while he's down. I thought Burrich, Verity, his dogs, Patience, Molly, etc were all good friends/allies. All the same much of this book takes place while Fitz is pretty young so maybe the context of the bad things happening are happening to a child make it worse. All the same, the world and the characters are interesting and I'm excited to read more

Listened to this bc Julia Whelan narrated it!!
I enjoyed this! I really loved the two stories and the idea that life happens & you’re always gonna end up exactly where you should be- even though it wasn’t part of the plan. It’s a great reminder to live in the now instead of the future. I love how everything felt connected and full circle.
Maybe this was a me problem but the quick switch to the different story / life always threw me!! Because obviously same characters and stuff ya know. So yeah that’s my only gripe. Perhaps if I read this and didn’t listen I would’ve done better with that.

4.25 stars rounded up on here! I wanna make this concise although I feel like I could talk about this book for a while tbh- here we go-
This was GOOD. This author writes stories that feel very very real. It was slow at times but in a good way- which I’m finding hard to put into words- but basically it’s how life is!! Sometimes slow, but enjoyable and relatable ya know? Ugh anyways.
Two POVS- which was fun. You see growth in both the main characters- and it happens authentically. This was also funny. And although I don’t share any similar life experiences with either main character YOU COULD RELATE AND FEEL IT.
Last 100 pages were my fav.
“And sometimes, happiness just rains down on you out of the clear blue sky.”
Anyways. That’s all. I wanna read more of this author 😌 (my 3rd book of hers).
