Things I Currently Know about Frankenstein's Monster:
Another thought that isn't relevant to the story... whenever I read Victorian-era books, there's some traitorous skepticism in me that believes people never really talked like this and they're all trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I will not be fooled.

there's this incredible focus on human emotions; on kindness and on ambition, especially. it's so rare to see that, even nowadays. robert walton seems very emotionally intelligent so far

Yes, I'm one of those people who actually reads the introductory essay(s) LOL. I really wish this one had focused on the differences between the original 1818 publication and the revised 1831 version; seems like a bit of a no-brainer and a missed opportunity? Instead we get an essay filled with (nonetheless, interesting and relevant) biographical information and a surface-level examination of the themes of the novel. I was hoping for a bit more.
Also, I find the preface hilarious. It's both comforting and horrifying that authors even hundreds of years ago had to start their books off clarifying that "no, in fact I don't agree with all the opinions of every character in this novel". I guess there are readers lacking reading comprehension in every era 😭
