I learned some interesting things about Ghana. As other have remarked, the way Appiah wraps his ethical programme up is frankly a bit disappointing and does not provide a tangible alternative to the philosophers he criticises. That would be forgivable if he did not promise to do otherwise in the introduction.

This failed to meet my expectations on so many levels. It had poor engagement with its own world, juvenile characters who have huge responsibilities yet fail to live up to them, clunky politics, a romance I didn’t believe in… It also gave me what I will be dubbing “the monarchy ick” for future purposes. I can’t empathise with characters who very clearly struggle under a system but refuse to question it. I also think involving Legally Blonde in the marketing of this book was a huge mistake because it set expectations (especially in the humour department) that the story simply failed to meet. e
