“Before long, the praise outweighed the anger, and the anger itself shifted in tone, from criticisms of the execution - à la, why is she even famous - to criticisms of the concepts inherent in the video - à la who has time to make soap?”
This lady only has 2 spectrums of emotions - pure rage/spite or fear/anxiety (and also self obsession). And isnt the latter criticism way more concerning??

“Despite these blessings, sometimes Dex could not sleep. In those hours, they frequently asked themself what it was they were doing. They never truly felt like they got a handle on that. They kept doing it all the same.”
Oh the courage in uncertainty and not knowing!! Just pure vibes and ‘I have to do this’!!

The author is so good at describing all the characters’ emotional world! Violet’s grief, loss, anxiety in entering society again after prison. This book also focuses on the beauty of relationships too, and thats nice. Themes like forgiveness, love and kindness emerge. The author’s language is so nice to read.
…Until the second to third last half, where everything just kinda went downhill with Violet’s character. She makes some morally questionable decisions and I was put off after that, because these actions are not expounded upon by the author to illustrate how she developed as a person after that experience. She becomes prideful and complacent of her place, and I wish that lesson in ego was elaborated upon because it is important. It was a grave mistake she made, and everybody moved on super quickly from it in the book. In this aspect, the other 2 characters are portrayed as overly kind people who accept Violet’s mistakes unconditionally, and its not realistic in my opinion for humans to be ‘good’ and forgiving in this perfect manner. After that, the plot continues to be random and just shown, not told. The ending is also a little abrupt.

violet cries on the bed for everything. relatable. life, especially in adulthood, is really just grieving so so much, again and again and again. not really sure what to do with all of that loss but we’ll see what violet does with it!
