What a fucking book. This is by far the best book I’ve read in quite a while. I never guessed what was going to happen, not once. I laughed and cried throughout the 700+ pages. Just wow. Truly incredible. Fully intend on reading the next book, already on the waitlist at my library. Never have I wanted to annotate a book before, but will likely be doing that because goddamn the quoteability in this one. Seriously god-tier book for sure.

Sweet and light. I was kind of hoping for more food industry shenanigans like a make out session or a bootygrab in the walk-in, instead the story seemed very centered on homegirl’s commitment fears she just so happened to work as a bartender and he just happened to be head chef. The third act break up was annoying only because Colin’s role in the story hadn’t really been fully explained and then his bs for why he pulled what he pulled was still missing the weight it needed to make sense at all. Ate this up in a day tho

A reread from college. I don’t think I processed how selfish Chris was during my first read. I was around the same age as him and found it inspirational, even though it’s a story that starts with his death. The call to abandon everything and be one with nature was something I deeply felt. This time around I’m understanding more of the “happiness is meant to be shared” aspect. Chris would have loved Alone, maybe not the winning money bit but the whole bushcraft, one with nature, lose your mind from being alone. He wouldn’t be able to take his books but I think he probably would have gotten out what he did and lived (probably would have been pulled out during a med check but whatevs) This story still hits. I really see the selfishness in completely running away. He clearly was made for human connection (as we all are), otherwise he wouldn’t have made friends with everyone he met. Overall, this story this time around made me think about human connection and purpose. We have this life and while we didn’t choose how we came into it we choose how we move through it and who we keep in our lives. Chris would have hated this capitalist hellscape for sure.
