WOW this is beautiful book. there's so much attention to the nature of this setting, the ecology. im feeling grief for the forest that's been cleared and all the change that's bound to come.
I can't help but visualize my childhood farm while reading. it seemed so perfectly pastoral, like everything had been set in its proper place. I wonder how it looked centuries ago

I resisted picking this up for a while because of its daunting size. Turns out, it's a breeze to get through in a few sittings.
This is a very frustrating, depressing read about medical gatekeeping. Emma's therapist is consistently horrible to her and that's basically it. I'm not sure how to judge the writing quality because it's all transcribed from memory. I think the best way I can relate the experience is that it's like if a friend told you a really fucked up, traumatic story. And you're just sitting there, shaking your head, getting angrier and angrier that this happened to the speaker.
So, not a very beautiful read. The art style is expressive and efficient, like a newspaper comic. im glad I read it, but I'm not sure if I can recommend it.

Yeah, this was a bit disappointing unfortunately. I agree with others that the big problem here is editing - I was about as sick of dogs as Loftus by the end. I think the bulk of the book (traveling the US, reviewing restaurants) was the least interesting part. Far more engaging were her takes on hot dog history.
The best parts of her travel narration were when her personality shined through. Like the gender pickles! it was fun thing for her to fixate on and take the piss. it gave me a way better impression of her than the constant self-deprecation and vague breakup posting.
