    Wtf is normal anyway?

Ngl, all that Keiko did was living the live and minding her own business. Sure she's not well off, but it's enough for her to survive day to day. But because she's neurodivergent, she's being discriminated by the people around her. I hate how they're begging and telling her to be "normal" 🙄

Like bro, her routine is what's normal for her.

── ⟢ ・⸝⸝ For me, this is an open ending book. Somewhat ambiguous, but it's enough. This book seems like it's a slice of life, but once you peel off the layer, there's something darker beneath it. It gives a picture of how some society functions and act irl, the standards and normalcy that it force upon the people.

Why I think this novella is inherently Gothic AF , without a single ghost, haunted castle, or supernatural twist:

    1. The main setting . A bright, clean convenience store which is also deeply confining. A sterile, rule-bound box mirroring the main character's psyche. She thrives there because it offers structure and rules she can follow without fail.
    2. The "secondary" setting is her home which is small, claustrophobic, confined and old, manifesting the way she feels at certain points in the novel.
    3. Keiko (the main character) is simultaneously relatable and deeply alien. Her neurodivergent inner world makes her "the Other", in true Gothic fashion. She might unsettle not through violence, but by existing outside societal norms.
    4. The emotional extremes. Stress about conforming, shock at her dispassionate choices, a kind of existential horror about the expectations placed on women and workers in a hyper-normalized society.
    5. There’s a grotesque, misogynistic male figure too. Less villainous than pathetic, which somehow makes him worse. He reminded me of the impotent, brooding male figures in 19th-century Gothic fiction.
    6. Themes of aging, social decay, and existential death swirl just under the fluorescent lights. Also, very important, the theme of societal expectations (which feels very Victorian IMO).

Honestly, this book is dark. Not quirky, not cute. Dark.

On a surface level, I now desperately want to visit a Japanese konbini and see it through Keiko's eyes. But emotionally, this read left me reflective and pondering on society and our place in it.

A modern Gothic dressed in a FamilyMart uniform.

A warning to whoever is interested in reading this. The first chapter is a 🍇 scene from the FMC past. This book is pitch black.

I urge you to really heed the trigger warnings because there are disturbing stuff happening inside of this book.

⋅⋆ ───── Okay. Imagine Ruinous Love Trilogy MCs shenanigans paired with The Mindfuck Series Lana Myers female rage, but make it darker. That's what's this book is giving out vibes with 💃

All in all, I had fun reading this book. It's short, it's fast paced, the FMC and MMC both fall in love at first sight and a match in heaven (or hell in this context). Even though my heart aches for the two MC, I'm glad to know they got their revenge.

⋅⋆ ───── My fave 𖹭.ᐟ “Go, I’m none of your concern, just forget about me because I’ll only break your heart.” “So break it,” “Break it. Crack it in two, shatter it to pieces because the thought of not having you in my life, of not having you like this in my arms, of not knowing you is already breaking my heart so I doubt you could do anymore damage.”
