    4.5
    Enjoyment: 4.0Quality: 4.5Characters: 5.0Plot: 4.5

Think of this book like a choose your own adventure novel. Cora, the core of the story as the Author explains, has a choice to make regarding what she will register as her sons name. The book then follows the three choices and examines the lives that result from each choice.

The choices we explore are Bear (Cora's daughter Maia's choice), Julian (Cora's Choice), and Gordon (the patriarchal tradition that has been the name of abuser after abuser).

This is a book about domestic abuse and violence so be warned that this is heavy from start to finish.

I really enjoyed seeing how each story played out and they went beyond my expectations especially the Gordon story line. It's hard to praise any aspect without giving away the story too much.

However, I think the reason this didn't fully land for me is that we don't really get to spend too much time in any of the universes. The characters are largely the same, but something about the differing realities left me slightly removed and so I have landed on a 4.5. Really great and maybe in another reality this was a five star book for me.

    Enjoyment: 3.0Quality: 4.0Characters: Plot:

"A deeply compassionate person propelled by her need for relational intimacy as well as her sense of moral duty, Harriet Tubman fought for the ability of all God’s creatures to share this earth in freedom and dignity. Whether or not we hold her religious convictions, we bear witness to the power she unleashed believing in something larger than herself. Harriet’s love of family, friendship with trees, faith in God, and care for the needy were values united by a tenet of togetherness."

This is a book that seeks to humanize Harriet Tubman, however we do not have a lot of information about her as a child. Therefore, this book uses women who are similar to Harriet Tubman to extrapolate about how Harriet might have felt about experiences she had as a child. I think this argument works, but I struggled to want to read a book that was basically "what if" or "maybe this" about Harriet Tubman. However, the second half of this book, which focuses on a time in her life where there is a lot more information about her, was stronger to me because we don't have the same thought experiment going on.

Regardless, Harriet Tubman is incredible and learning more about her is deeply enriching.

For fans of Dolly Alderton and HBO’s Hacks, a whip-smart, laugh-out-loud funny debut novel about faking it (and “making it”) as a writer in Hollywood. TV writer Caroline Neumann is thirty-four and mired in professional envy and self-hatred. Even Harry, her usually supportive therapist husband, thinks it’s time for her to press pause on her career ambitions and focus on getting pregnant, despite Caroline’s serious ambivalence about having children. When Caroline accidentally stumbles on Harry’s patient session notes and offhandedly mentions what she finds in a meeting with a producer, the momentum of Hollywood takes over. Before she knows it—and unbeknownst to Harry—Caroline finds herself pitching a TV show about the deepest, darkest secrets of her husband’s favorite patient, a woman known to Caroline only as the Teacher. Amid the indignities of the Hollywood development process, Caroline must balance her burning desire for professional validation against her own morality and the health of her marriage. And when Caroline forms a real-life relationship with Teacher herself, the lines between art and life begin to blur further, shaking up Caroline’s understanding of what it means to be the “likeable female protagonist” of her own life.

    The Bright Years

    The Bright Years

    Sarah Damoff

One family. Four generations. A secret son. A devastating addiction. A Texas family is met with losses and surprises of inheritance, but they’re unable to shake the pull back toward each other in this big-hearted family saga perfect for readers of Mary Beth Keane and Claire Lombardo. Ryan and Lillian Bright are deeply in love, recently married, and now parents to a baby girl, Georgette. But Lillian has a son she hasn’t told Ryan about, and Ryan has an alcohol addiction he hasn’t told Lillian about, so Georgette comes of age watching their marriage rise and fall. When a shocking blow scatters their fragile trio, Georgette tries to distance herself from reminders of her parents. Years later, Lillian’s son comes searching for his birth family, so Georgette must return to her roots, unearth her family’s history, and decide whether she can open up to love for them—or herself—while there’s still time. Told from three intimate points of view, The Bright Years is a tender, true-to-life novel that explores the impact of each generation in a family torn apart by tragedy but, over time, restored by the power of grace and love.
