I personally loved this book! The one issue I had, was telling Lily's perspective in reverse. It made it a bit confusing for me to keep up with the timeline, but I understand why they did it. As a cis individual, this gave me a lot of perspective into the life of a trans person. However, as the book says, when you meet a trans person. . . You've only met one trans person. I was thoroughly surprised by the ending (maybe because I fail to see the obvious, lol) and thought it was a great way to wrap it up. I would recommend this book.

This is one of my favorite books now! I would reread. Beautiful yet heartbreaking queer coming of age story during the Red Scare. Hits home a little too hard as immigrants are discriminated against again. We still haven't learned from our history.

Shirley is a terrible person and an even worse friend. 🙅🏼♀

It always brings me to tears reading about characters who start to experience queer feelings and emotions, but because they live in a homophobic society that tells them queer people are wrong and scandalous, they don’t know why they feel that way or just straight up force themselves to ignore it

Very well written book explaining the racist impact of varying policies and the drawbacks of zero sum politics. I listened to the audiobook of this. The tone reminded me of a persuasive essay. Solid evidence and examples to back up their points, but can be hard listen.

I went into this book thinking that it would be a classic murder mystery. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see an view of all of the characters in Black Earth County. It provided a unique peek into a small southern town, post world war II, covering the complexities of navigating racial prejudices in this era.

Not my favorite Freida McFadden book, but still a good read! Managed to read this in 5 hours on a road trip.

I'll be honest, I am not a large critic and will frequently give books 5 star ratings. However, the life and journey of Nancy Wake is inspirational, cutthroat, and humanizing. While it is based on her life and there are some alterations, the authors did a great job showcasing her positive and negative attributes. No one is perfect in war. There will be things to look back on that we are not proud of, but she persisted. Reading this in the current political climate is scary but can give one hope. Definitely recommend reading.

WOW! What an amazing book. This was selected for book club and I am so glad. I've been in a reading slump and this pulled me right out. James had a tumultuous life. Despite the horrid things he did, you were always empathetic to his cause, understanding his actions. For anyone looking to capture a glimpse into the history of slavery, this is a must read.

I didn't realize this book was available in another language! Hoping to find some other English speakers to converse with as I read this.
