Does anyone have any good book recs that can be used in an exam essay? I have my final exams this year and whilst I have read the classics like "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "Crime and Punishment" and such others, I am spiraling and feel like I don't have enough material for good examples to bring into my essay.

Any book recs that discuss important topics, that are still relevant today. Or also just books that make you think, that I can like write on. I don't know if anyone else has a problem like this or would find this helpful, but I'm seriously thankful to everyone who replies or has any thought on the subject. 🩷

Just something I was pondering this morning. I feel there is a good deal of popular, contemporary literature that has a fairly generic voice, where the prose of one author could be swapped out with the prose of another without any noticeable difference. I also think a lot of writing advice for new writers tends toward erasure of voice and pushes authors to a more commercial, generic quality. Which is all fine, as far as it goes--I read and enjoy a lot of those books.

However, the books that seem to stick with me more are those in which the author has a distinctive voice. A book where you read a couple of pages and the writing itself, the voice of the author or narrator or what have you, makes you say "OK, now this is something I'm going to enjoy" before you ever even get into the story.

Which do all of you prefer? A strong, distinctive narrative voice or a more generic style where that sort of thing disappears into the background?

Let’s talk about overused words…

The Oxford English Dictionary has over half a million words and yet the council of fantasy authors seem to have dedicated their lives to using approximately 37 of them... and it feels like that number drops to about 21 when we get to romantasy specifically. 😂😭

So, readers, what words need to go to Vocabulary Jail 🔒 for a little cooldown period? 😅

I know I mentioned fantasy authors (because I read a lot of fantasy), but I’m sure other genres are guilty of overusing perfectly good words until we can no longer hear them without rolling our eyes. 😆

I’ll start: WHORL

Once upon a time, whorl felt whimsical. Magical. Atmospheric. Now, everything has whorls: light, paintings, floor tiles, evening gowns, back tattoos, mysterious artefacts... It's enough now. 😂

It's not an inherently bad word, but I yearn for some more creativity.

so, i was wondering what you might do when you feel like starting any book - or even continuing - feels anxiety-inducing or tedious.

right now, i am stuck between several books – i am starting wicked king to catch up with my friend, but it's stressing me out, as well as once upon a broken heart, and I have two more books i paused. can't read more than a page at a time in any of them.

should i read a completely different genre? should i stick to one page in a few minutes? force myself to power through until it sticks?
