I had a lot of fun with this book and honestly I needed that after reading two crappy books back to back

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

This book makes some very good, if occasionally trite, points about the true level of control we have over ourselves, our lives and others. Intertwining personal stories and those of loved ones with the principles of the 'Let Them Theory' makes it motivational and digestible (I listened to the audiobook and found it particularly so). I most liked the focus on 'Let Me' towards the end of the book. However, the hype surrounding this book is overstated in my opinion, and I feel there are many other self-help books which convey very similar messages. I also think the book missed a big opportunity in speaking about people who may not have as much control as is continuously implied, such as those suffering with chronic illnesses, debilitating mental illness or with caring responsibilities for people in their lives (among many others). Lastly, I think the section on not enabling a loved one's self-destructive behaviours towards the end of the book is very American in its focus on individualism. Yes, Robbins acknowledges the difference between supporting and enabling, and that not enabling is not synonymous with abandoning one's loved ones, but it struck me as too objective to be able to implement with ones own parents, partners, children or friends. Overall, it is an instructive and entertaining read/listen, but not one I would rush to the top of your TBR list.

Idk if this is a hot take but I feel like their dynamic is just trauma dumping 😭😭 it all feels so forced too, like no real person is gonna get into their whole backstory with someone they just met, and I hate it when romance books do the thing when the couple has some honesty pact because then it just feels like a cheap cop out to dump a bunch of backstory without context

I feel like everyone raves about this book so I really wanted to enjoy it more than I did 😭 Writing was good, magic system was interesting, and I liked all the characters, but I'm just so bummed out that this isn't a continuing series. It feels like it's leading into more but since the author is choosing to not continue in the Theonite universe it just feels incomplete.
