Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her. Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom of Blunder—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets. But nothing comes for free, especially magic. When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. And the highwayman? He just so happens to be the King’s nephew, Captain of the most dangerous men in Blunder…and guilty of high treason. Together they must gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

I loved this!! 4 1/2 stars. An interesting, unique story with enjoyable characters. Loooove the audiobook narrator! Her voice was perfect for this story. Excited for the next book to come out and to see how the cliffhanger is going to be resolved!!

lol I said rtc but then I had too much to say when my initial shock wore off

I had this book on my tbr but I honestly wasn’t dying to read it. Thankfully, this was my February book club book and I am BEYOND grateful that it was!

I am in awe at how much of a grip this book has on me. I felt so connected to Elspeth and her struggles throughout the whole story and really enjoyed the other characters in this book.

Fair warning, this is not an easy read by any means. This magic system, although fairly straightforward in the way that it works, is incredibly difficult to keep track of. You will constantly be questioning how things work in this world but that adds another level of enjoyment to this book. I highly recommend not reading any other book while reading this one so you can keep track of everything.
