Listening to this as an audiobook was a mixed experience for me. I did appreciate the experience of being dropped right into the midst of a matrilineage-timeline of sorts. I believe that after finishing this book, this work would make for a very compelling TV show. There is a lot of depth to these characters that I would want to see visualized/actualized in a different form of storytelling instead. It was often hard to keep up with all the moving parts to the family, but I sat with that confusion and realized, that this is a story not only of relatives but also one of diaspora. The shifting of time and space and characters is so reflective of the actual experience with trying to keep up with your family across borders and such. Once I realized that, I had a deeper appreciation for the narrative.
