"...Spotify is not just selling artists on data. It is selling them on optimization. The writer Rob Horning once argued in his newsletter that datafication, or the process of rendering our lives as data, is 'first and foremost... a kind of surveillance designed to impose classifications and norms on the surveilled while devaluing whatever ways they understand themselves.' It's a way to encourage artists to minimize their own conception of their work, and maximize its machine-legibility."
Wowww, will be looking more into this datafication, it seems so relevant these days. Curious if Spotify Wrapped and similar trends will be mentioned in this book...Seems like every app/social media is making their own type of "wrapped" now. I love data and statistics (like Storygraph), but very interested in increasing my awareness of datafication and how it can act as surveillance. I think it largely depends on how the data is being used/acted upon, especially in a commercial sense.
