Happy Easter to those who celebrate. Happy long weekend to those who get one. And general happy weekend vibes to everyone else.
What are your plans for the weekend? Are you going to get some time to read? Starting a new book? Seeing family? School work catch-up (of whatever level)? The boring odds and ends of life?
I'm skipping a family event on Sunday, but I have an Easter afternoon tea tomorrow, which should be fun. Other than that, I'll be reading either the book I started this morning or the book I can't get out of my mind (I hate my Insta algorithm right now for introducing me to this).

I really want to love this, but so far Iām struggling! The writing feels so-so and Iām not very interested in the story. Maybe Iām just being picky 𤪠Is it worth it to keep going?

I am blessed to live in a neighborhood with many different kinds of trees, including weeping willows and different kinds of cherry trees⦠But I did not know that a āweeping cherry treeā existed. Iām so glad I do now thanks to this book! š¤©

I loved the movies so I can't wait to see how the original unravels the story!

1.5 stars. If Iād known this was categorized as literary fiction, I would never have picked it up because I never like literary fiction, and I did not enjoy this book either.
It sounded good from the synopsis; a different look at serial killers through the eyes of the women in their lives. But the execution was not good. There was so much imagining and philosophizing about what might have been that it was ridiculous. One example that was just so over the top: one of the victims (in the alternate reality where she didnāt die) has a third daughter. That daughter grows up and works at a zoo. She goes into the leopardās enclosure and sits down. The leopard comes over and sleeps with her. Like WTF. I just didnāt get the purpose of including all this āalternate realityā stuff.
There was a lot of purple prose, which Iām not a fan of. I like straight forward language. And this book was way too long. I was so bored by the end and I couldnāt wait for it to be finished. I even took a break from it to listen to an ARC, and it still felt never-ending once I came back to it.
The story itself was ok. It was interesting enough that I got through it instead of DNF. There were summary mentions of how racist the justice system is, but Ansel and his victims were all white, to my knowledge, so Iām not sure why that was included.
I thought the best part of the book was the execution scene. How in the end, itās not really justice and it doesnāt change anything for the victims or their families. It really makes you consider whether the death penalty is the right punishment.
I just didnāt like this book, but Iām in the minority.
