Definitely gave it some leeway for being a YA book, as there were some themes I've seen explored before in similar ways and a bit of a week main character imo.
BUT I had a good time, the atmosphere was really good, and I loved the emphasis on Hawaiian indigeneity and knowledge.
Had it been a little twistier or done something a little more interesting with some of the plot beats (I could see where it was going pretty early, though I didn't get all of it ofc), this could have been a 5 ⭐! If I was 17, it probably would have been. But also I'm a little older and have read a chunk of horror at this point, which is why I rated accordingly.
