As much as I wanted to, I really just couldn't get into this book. Even when it picked up around 50% of the way through, I still felt like it was dragging. Probably a good book for someone else, but not my favorite.

‘Nowadays I think that maybe it would have been all right to be a bit of a burden to the people around me. Young people like you are paying the price for people like me gritting my teeth, bearing it all myself and not showing any weakness. I didn’t ask for help, and that stopped other people around me from asking for it.’

Beautiful prose, excellent concept and execution, my biggest issues was that I loved Zhu so much that I kind of skimmed Ouyang's parts.... (which is entirely a me problem lol). So many lines in this book were so well written and stood out to me, and I really hope more people read this book because it was so good. Imagine if history was sick as hell. Perhaps there was some glorification of violence but I'm supporting it because nonbinary wrongs.
