3.75 ⭐️ the plot and writing were both good and kept me engaged! lost me a little at parts when it got a little smut heavy, personally, and the book was a little long (630 pages) when it didn’t need to be, in my opinion, but i got reeled back in by the twist. the banter was chefs kiss, i was giggling & kicking my feet <3 i can’t wait to read the second book :)

this one was a surprise to me; it didn't feel like Carley's other works had—it felt, to me, how people feel about Great Big Beautiful Life has felt like a letdown for some people, with how it didn't exactly feel like Emily Henry, how it was just different compared to her earlier works. this one is Carley's second earliest work, and yet, it almost feels like it was her debut novel, it felt that different to her other three novels that she's written so far. i'm a sucker for second-chance so once i realized that's what this would be—i went into this one blind, i didn't know anything about it before i'd started it—but in this one, i just didn't care about either of the characters, their stories, or anything that happened to them. i was, quite frankly and devastatingly to me, bored, and even considered DNFing at 70%, but i had stupid hope that i would somehow grow more attached to fern and will during the last 30% (i didn't, obviously). this one was just disappointing to me, and i find that i liked Every Summer After better compared to this one, and i hate cheating. i do still hold high hopes for her future releases, but this one was a miss.

Carley has such a beautiful way of writing her characters, setting the perfect, picturesque scenes, and feeling like you’re actually there, in the middle of the story, literally watching it unfold in front of your very eyes. these romances are, technically, cliché, yes, but the stunning way she writes, the breathtaking settings, and, in my opinion, unforgettable (main AND minor) characters put her in a different league of romance. (again, to me.) it was so, so lovely to see charlie and alice fall in love, as well as getting to love alice’s nan, siblings, and parents, and see her grow comfortable and more confident within herself and her job that she loves so much, and getting to see percy and sam and where life had taken them. i can’t wait to read the rest of Fortune’s backlog; 6 out of 5 stars 🌟

after how much i LOVE(D) BTTM, i was expecting to love this one. but i didn’t. sure, i highlighted some things, i laughed a little, sure, but this didn’t feel like wes and liz. this felt like low-budget actors trying to portray wes and liz (and doing a terrible job at it). it felt like they were hollow versions of the characters i fell in love with, like anything that made them, them was stripped away and tried to be molded into new, boring versions of what they’d been previously. because that’s what i felt through this, i was bored. i strongly, strongly considered DNFing it, but once i got to 60% through i just kinda hoped it’d get better, and it did catch my attention again around 70-75% through but even that came and went. i just wish BTTM had stayed a standalone. some books don’t need sequels, and BTTM was one of them.
