I'd recommend this if you're looking for a short book that leaves you unsettled and is very graphic and gory.
This book brought in a lot of symbolism and metaphors that are unfortunately lost on my brain, but maybe that's the meaning of this book? There were a lot of comparisons being made and things said, but I could not quite grasp the exact arguments and was also left wondering if that was simultaneously the author's intention.
To me, this book depicts how so many people wander through life aimlessly or to be forced into circumstances that leave you powerless and adrift. The red light district setting was great to explore these ideas in and I WISH I could say something profound about the comparisons being made between American and Japanese culture. The unreliable narrator kept me guessing and I really appreciate how this author tried to point out in 5 million ways how Frank is WEIRD.
Also, I did make miso soup for dinner after reading this :))

It is what it says on the tin, super straight forward and had actual good and helpful advice.

so you wanna talk about the cycle of violence
I've recently read a lot of books and watched some shows that talk about the cycle of violence and war, figured it was worth compiling these works into a list! In my opinion, these are all great (AND NOT HAPPY) stories that feature characters living through times of violence, war, and strife and also are experiencing discrimination. They make you question what's your responsibility to others and how you are contributing to the cycle.
