The spice on this one nearly took me out. I’d wager the romance to plot ratio was a healthy 50/50
think: full chapters of steamy scenes, while also developing character chemistry and tying into backstories. There were some tropes that felt familiar to the genre, but there was a freshness to how the author approached writing these scenes that kept me hooked. Definitely a bit darker and full on, but I’m here for it. The MCs did have a bit of insta-chemistry which took some getting used to, but once I did I was locked in. Overall an entertaining read with a fast moving plot. Curious to see where book 2 takes us.

Solid 3.9 stars. SJM stuffed a LOT of plot into this novel, which kept me hooked for two days straight. It offered a pretty big cast of characters who maintained relatively unique voices, somewhat believable redemption arcs, plus a couple of surprising twists. The urban setting was refreshing — didn’t expect to enjoy the gritty cop/detective/fantasy crossover as much as I did. Last 20% of the book was full throttle adrenaline. Enjoyable read!
