If Books Could Kill

This is my first book I’ve read by this author and I’m looking forward to reading more. I do have to say I’m not the biggest fan of historical romances, but this one was really well done. The romance was balanced by a fun plot. I liked the fmc and her friends and really appreciated that the mmc was not some rake that we’re reminded of every 10 pages (my most recent issue with historicals I’ve picked up). I have an idea of what this series could turn into for two more books so I’m curious where it will go.

It took me way too long to read this and that’s not necessarily the books fault. But that does mean that I never really got sucked into the story or have that much to say about it. The metal band aspect of it is fun. I think I would have liked some flashback scenes or something to get more invested in the romance.

Chase Me If You Can by Heather Frances 🌪️
Give me all the storm chaser romances! I loved this and will definitely be reading more from the author as she releases more books. The writing style is so easy to get sucked into. I didn't want to put the book down.
Sloane's job is a wedding photographer but she cuts out a couple of months each spring for her real passion, chasing tornados and photographing them. So when this storm chasing season includes a photography competition which could land her photo as the cover of a prestigious magazine it could be the break she needs to shift into landscape photography full time. Sloane plans to spend this storm chasing season alone with no distractions. That includes "Wild Wes" who is a fremey of sorts to Sloane and gets his nickname by making risky decisions to get the photo. So when Sloane finds Wes stranded on the side of a road after being caught in a storm, she reluctantly agrees to spend the rest of her storm chasing season with Wes. As they are chasing down storms she gets to see the other side of Wes. It's different than the version she thought she knew and feelings quickly start to grow.
The tension between these characters! I think single POV was perfect for this book because as a reader we got to learn more about Wes as Sloane got to. He comes off as the slightly goofy, always flirty guy but there's much more underneath that. I loved getting to see Sloane's feelings about Wes evolve while getting to know Wes better. Sloane is very much the independent, eldest daughter which I found very relatable. The conflict that comes up in the book very much fits the characters and I was not at all bothered by the third act breakup because of that.
The storm chasing element of the book was a lot of fun. Especially because the focus was on photography of the storms rather than the science behind them. Plus the storms play as great plot points for Sloane and Wes's relationship growth, triggering moments between them that wouldn't happen if not in the situation.

Adored this! Loved the little gamer chats between the main characters at the beginning of each chapter. It added a little extra to the book given the characters didn’t know the identity of their gamer usernames in the real world. The romance was really sweet and I liked both the characters a lot. Always love some woman in STEM representation as well.

So I really had enjoyed this authors YA book and then tried 3 of her adult romances before disliking them and giving up. I hadn’t enjoyed any of them but wanted to give the author one last try with this book cause the cover is gorgeous and the blurb sounded good. Well I’m definitely done with reading this author. I really don’t jive with the writing style. I didn’t care about the romance or the characters. I didn’t want to pick up the book because I truly didn’t care what happened and I hate that. I should have dnf-ed and in a way I did because I skimmed quickly to the end after trying to actually read it for the first 25% or so. Oh well. Now I know I’m truly done with trying to read this authors books.

I’ll admit I did not enjoy the first book in this series, but I could tell that I enjoyed the authors writing and wanted to give this book a a try. I’m very glad I did because I enjoyed this story so much more! I found the fmc very relatable as an eldest daughter and a people pleaser. It took me a little longer to connect with the mmc but he has a bit of a complicated past that gets uncovered. Both the characters go through growth in the books book though I think I would have liked to see a little more of it from the mmc as that all was all saved for the last few chapters while the fmc was showing the gradual growth through the book.
As always, really appreciate a couple who has the conversation about not wanting kids and that being their choice.

I feel a bit conflicted on this one. I really liked the authors writing style and the way she wrote the characters. My issue is more so with the story and the characters themselves. I didn’t like the mmc at all and that’s probably more of a me thing with not liking the rake type mmc where you are reminded so many times how much he likes to spend time with women. The way he acted in the first half of the book nearly had me wanting to dnf because I don’t think he could redeem himself for me. After finishing I can’t really say for sure that he did. I didn’t mind the fmc. It felt a bit classic a woman in the historical period who knows absolutely nothing about anything sexual and the rake comes in to teach her. I need more conversations and emotional connection between them throughout the book.
I do plan to give this author another try with whatever she writes next though as I did enjoy the writing style.
