I remembered reading this when I was 11 and not understanding what was happening at any point. On a reread, I do get it but it is dense and drifting for such a slim book so I kind of stand by my first reaction.
The characters are great, classic delightful found family, detailed dive into victorian London which is a setting I love, and it's Pulman so lots of perfect sentences but the plot isn't brilliant and neither is the pacing. Lots of twists and murders that only sort of feel like they matter and have a boring explanation.

The Ruby in the Smoke (Sally Lockhart, #1)

Didn't really work for me, though the relationship between the women came the closest, there was some good romance and tension. Side characters never came to life, found the pacing something of a struggle, lots of long passages of characters musing about the nature of the universe and being a woman in a man's world but nothing that felt very origional. Felt more like a book to be quoted than one to disappear into.

Not always my favourite books by the English Canon writers, but the ones which are a good introduction. You know, to see if you get along.

Looking at other reviews, the people who disliked this seemed to hate either the romance or Margaret's story - I found both pleasant! Neither shook my world or reduced me to the sobbing mess that Happy Place did. It was fun and thoughtful and sexy and crammed a lot in while keeping the heart going. I loved the thread of story between Alice and her Mum. I think I would have liked the doorstop version of this where everything gets more depth and detail even more.

I am actively bad at solving mysteries so you know you're in trouble when I see nearly all the twists coming. That said, it was very readable and I liked the different voices, plot was just a miss for me in the end, despite thinking the premise was cool.
