    Clang Clang Clang.

What stood out most in this book was how much I loved the character POVs. Instead of feeling sprawling or bloated, each perspective felt purposeful. Every arc moved forward. Every character evolved in a way that felt earned.

Darrow feels more reflective and layered here. Lysander’s trajectory continues in unsettling but compelling ways. Lyria’s growth feels grounded and human. Even characters who once felt like wildcards come into sharper focus. The evolution across the board is what makes this book shine.

    Also F Lysander.

“… that’s because magic is a form of psychosis.”

Probably my favorite novella I’ve read! I love the idea of comedic fantasy, and the characters were what really sold the book for me. The voices were clear with perspective shifts, and the setting was wonderful. Kingfisher’s ability to world build in less than 200 pages is amazing. I loved this book!

Reminds me of some classic dystopian - Orwell, Huxley, Bradbury. But takes it a bit further.

The modernization, acceptance, and industrialization of cannibalism is not the most disturbing part of this book. Which was the point. I don’t have much to say other than I will not read this again, I did not enjoy it, but I couldn’t put it down. Interesting concept, well executed. The author did a good job of making you empathize with the main character, and showing his humanity, before showing his true nature. It was obvious that with him being so detested by the industry we were to see him as “good.” I did see the ending coming from a mile away but I don’t see any other way this could have ended.

Quality is higher than everything else because I do think it was well written.
