"Alex, with his unreasonable sense of responsibility for everyone and everything, would take all the blame upon himself."

This man is definitely an Anthony Bridgerton variant. The whole setup of "I have to rescue my sweet younger sister from marrying this terrible man" reminds me so much of The Viscount Who Loved Me, which was published 7 years after this book. I wonder if Julia Quinn took any inspiration from Lisa Kleypas here!

I liked this story, but I didn't love it. The prose was a bit clunky. The tone was also very serious, and I prefer some levity in a romance, even when the subject matter is dark and serious. It was very well-researched, which I always appreciate. I loved the premise, setting, and overall plot of this one, but it just didn't have that sparkle for me.

I'm a sucker for a criminal with a moral code. Both of the main characters are equally insufferable at the start of the book, which was great fun to read. I feel like their personalities became a bit flattened as the story went on, but maybe that's just on account of growth and character development. The ending was more sentimental and serious than I expected, but there was also a lovely sense of closure as the story continued a little bit beyond their wedding.
