"oh you were on tumblr, weren't you?"
books that feel like they were written by authors who spent most of their time on tumblr circa 2015. effervescent!
"what were YOU doing at the devil's sacrament?"
reccs always welcome but will be vetted

Exactly the kind of unrestrained mess I love to see in horror. Made me genuinely angry at times. Fantastic ending. Read this in one sitting.

This book had me feeling all warm and fuzzy! Fantastic characters, great chemistry between the leads, and an intriguing plot woven through with shining moments of humor and realness. Yadriel and Julian had a great balance of initial antagonism, humor, and affection that made their relationship jump off the page. There were times when they were so dorky or awkward that I was like, "Yeah, that's two dumb kids fumbling their way through and doing their best." To me, that's the mark of a great YA book.
The writing did at times feel a bit young and more tell than show (thinking specifically of how the characters would talk to each other about class, transphobia, etc.), but not to the point where it took me out of the story -- and I think it's good for young adult novels, at least, to write about those things in a very down-to-earth way. I liked the scene where Yadriel, Maritza, and ghost-Julian approached Julian's friends in the train underpass because it felt like the scene where Thomas was most intentional about showing us social inequality in action, and how even good intentions don't always lead to good outcomes.
Overall, a really fantastic read, especially if you're looking for something with equal helpings humor, romance, and mystery.
