The writing was too fan-fiction-y for such an interesting plot. Alex Aster's promotion on TikTok and Instagram overhyped this book way too much. As much as I agree with people who like the book, the lack of planning and poor execution of the writing makes me wish I could put it down and be done with it. I skipped so many chapters in this book (never a good sign). The rotten cherry on top is that almost all the dialogue sounds like it's coming from the same person. The characters are not fleshed out enough as individuals to make them feel like they have a personality. All I know about Isla is that she's insecure about having no powers. The love triangle plot felt rushed as well. I couldn't tell where these feelings of the characters' were coming from.
