I think my main problem with the book was Jamilah. How are you almost 30 and still this naive and sheltered... sure, your father is a cop, but don't you even look at the news? Do you really not know what the world is like, especially for people who look like you??

I did like the two of them as a couple for the most part, but I didn't like how their relationship was developed. The first half of the book is full of back and forth, and them trying to work through their prejudices, and then the second half is mostly time skips to show them working on their joint businesses. So many months go by, and we're not really shown their relationships during those, just bits and pieces. I think developing their relationship should have been more important than focusing on the business development, considering their rocky start.

Also, how her father changed his mind all of a sudden felt very unsatisfactory. For the entire book he refused to even let her speak, and then suddenly after one chat with an old friend he dismantled years of prejudices and apologized to both Jamilah and Rashad.

This didn't work much for me. I think the start was pretty choppy and weirdly paced, and I considered DNFing for a bit but thankfully it got a bit better as it went on (but still felt a bit choppy/messy/confusing at times). Overall I still see what the author was trying to do and like the topics included in the story, even though they didn't feel very fleshed out.
