There were parts that were incredibly engrossing, exciting, and cool, and there were some parts that fell a bit flat. I think there’s more that the story could’ve explored, more that could’ve been done with certain characters and just generally farther that the envelope could’ve been pushed, but overall it was a fun concept and a good story!

I really enjoyed this! The prose won’t be for everyone, and some of the early violence felt gratuitous, but I appreciated the overall plot and the character growth. There’s a lot that could be said about the redemption of two homophobic fathers that were only capable of loving their sons post-mortem, but regardless of whether or not these real life figures would deserve that kind of redemption, I found the character growth realistic and meaningful. You could also probably pick apart the simplistic depictions of race and class, but tbh I don’t read books for the purpose of picking them apart, and so I’m willing to accept and appreciate those relationships and descriptions for what they are. I really liked the little moments of awareness and growth, and felt that it really added to the story of these two men with unlawful pasts learning to be more accepting and open to differences and how that affects everybody’s lived experiences. And for however flawed these men were, I found them likeable! Buddy Lee’s humor and Ike’s dedication to those he loves throughout the story. I liked the way the plot unfolded and all of the questions that get answered by the end👀
