Not quite thriller-y enough for me. I enjoyed the writing, but besides that first scene the plot was nonexistent. It's more of a character study. But unfortunately I still don't know enough about Louise in order for me to call it a successfull one.

There’s no denying this author is very knowledgeable, but a great writer he is not. This book reads like a chronological stream of facts, which weren’t very well-balanced in terms of “recognisability”. And by that I mean that some more obscure events/facts were mentioned and glossed over, as if the reader would know about those, but then other facts were pretty well-known already. It was a weird mix that felt confusing in its target audience.
I also feel like this book (insofar that I can tell; at this point I’ve only read the chapters on Mussolini and Hitler, but I didn’t think the other chapters would follow a different format) wasn’t able to do what the title says it set out to do. Like I said, it rattles off facts, without presenting a case for the original hypothesis. It doesn’t at all get into how or why a cult of personality forms. How does a seemingly normal person become a dictator? I wouldn’t know. I still want to, however this book isn’t going to give me that answer.
