God I love Marcella. I wanna be Marcella when I grow up (I'm 27).
This is a reread for me because I got the arc for the third book (I screamed when I got it)

holy moly!!!! WHAT AN AMAZING READ!!! I had a bit of a hard time wanting to get into R.F. Kuang's writing, as it just intimidated me. She's a smart woman and I've heard her books can seem "too" academic and dense, which tbh, didn't really want to fully go back into university mode.
HOWEVER! Leave all of that at the door! It was such an experience and joy to get so invested in the plot, THESE CHARACTERS, and surprisingly the academic feel of the whole entire book! I enjoyed the whole journey through hell and could not wait to see what would happen by the end. Peter is a lovely character and I think he is an amazing duo to, Alice, who I believe is the most relatable and complex character I've had the pleasure of getting to know.
I could go on and on about how much Alice's mindset throughout the book felt so similar to my own, and her change in attitude nearing the end of the novel felt like it reflected my own life after university, but...I'd be here all day.
I will say my one complaint was nearing the 70%-80% mark where I felt as nothing was really progressing or keeping me as invested as the rest of the book, iykyk.
either way, a brilliant read I'm so happy that I was able to finish this before I see her at the Sydney Writers Festival!
