this book has a lot to say, delivers some fantastic thrills and tension, and is an incredible read throughout. you kind of have to stew in the muck for the first part, but i promise your patience will be rewarded.
you'll get a lot out of this if you're a trans woman, but i honestly think anyone can enjoy this novel. it feels like it's got that "here's some inside baseball, we're letting you in on the secret" quality that allowed detransition, baby to catch on with a wider audience.
and i truly hope this book finds a vast readership! i think it stands shoulder to shoulder among the best of both trans literary fiction and literary horror in general. it's niche, but it's the good stuff. if you're looking for books that actually have the juice, not just whatever's in the online trans monoculture hype machine, look no further.
i'll be keeping my ear to the ground for any other books clements decides to release. also, i loooved the ending. the more i think about this book, the more i love it. give it a read!

I'm currently reading Libby books on my phone, but keep hearing good things about eReaders (hi Sarah if you are reading this).
I'm trying to work out if they are worth the money.
So thoughts? Do you have an e-reader? Do you like it? Which one?

I did gnot like this book. A tired, Running With Scissors-style early 2000s wacky dysfunctional family comedy with a few decent jokes, a lot of more or less flat characters and three extremely precocious children. Couldn’t help but think of Geese (the band) the entire time - to a lesser degree here but still, it’s the hype machine around an exciting new book/album/etc that really couldn’t be any less original. If this were a 2005 McSweeneys joint maybe I would have enjoyed it, but 20-something years later it’s got nothing new to say.

incredible. i love this format so much that i desperately want to rip it off. i'm so taken by this book's love for art, and its coexistent empathy and contempt for artists, that i want to start truly devoting myself to my own art. this book is rich with meaning, i could spend the next week thinking about little else and still find myself unpacking different aspects of it
