wow what a great surprise this was!!! i adore police procedurals but it’s not often they rise above a 3.5 star for me, which for me means a book was really enjoyable but not particularly memorable. this was such a strong opening to this series and i adore Van already. there’s a lot going on, plot-wise, but it comes together really well. excited to continue the series!!!

    My Thorns For Your Roses

    My Thorns For Your Roses

    Kristen Argyres

True love takes many forms. As one of the few survivors of her generation, Lark wants to live a quiet, peaceful life. All she needs is a tolerable husband. On her 24th birthday, Lark offends the local faerie lord, the shapeshifter Tamlin, who punishes her with a rose rooted in her flesh. In her efforts to convince Tamlin to undo his handiwork, Lark visits the forest daily and discovers the breathtaking and terrifying wonders of his realm. Despite her pragmatic nature tugging her toward a mortal huntsman, Lark falls for Tamlin. After a near-fatal accident exposes Tamlin’s cruel deception, Lark moves to the capital to accept a marriage of convenience. Yet when she learns of Tamlin’s capture, Lark must choose whether to secure her future or risk it all to save the love of her life from his cannibal ex. -- MY THORNS FOR YOUR ROSES is a "Tam Lin" retelling written in the spirit of the Scottish faerie tale and folksong - for readers who enjoyed the fae in Heather Fawcett's EMILY WILDE series, retellings like Naomi Novik's SPINNING SILVER, and the complicated family dynamics of Kell Woods' AFTER THE FOREST and UPON A STARLIT TIDE. goddamn this series has my heart, its just so SO enjoyable—it’s the best equivalent to a trashy paranormal CW show i’ve read where the plot is so convoluted but somehow really interesting, and above all, the CHARACTERS. i fell in love immediately with the expansion of the world we got in this one, too, and really think this is where the series truly earns its giant page count. it’s corny and campy yes, but that’s part of the charm!!!

great concept and lots of cool ideas here, but rough around the edges and pacing got tedious after the second act. excited to see how their writing develops in future books!

loved everything about this in theory but my LORD (pun intended) it could not hold my attention at ALL. i love weird horror so much and i love the weird horror that was here but im sick of the slow burn!! i want all the horror all the time!! the meandering plot does not create tension or suspense for me, only boredom and a suspicion that you’re trying to seem “literary”
