I had really low expectations of this book for some reason, but honestly? It kind of slapped. But be warned, this is not a 'dragon' or even really a 'romantasy' book. Going in with those kinds of expectations is likely to disappoint. However, it is fundamentally a book about power and oppression. About the victors rewriting history and exactly how seductive corruption and the patriarchy can be.
I feel like, despite the romance(s) being a lot of what drives the plot, they also take a back seat. This is the story of a woman coming into her own power and understanding about the world - this isn't a love story (or at least not yet).
For a debut novel? It's pretty well done.

The only reason this doesn’t get 5 stars is Veronica Roth’s insistence on leaving the ending open ended while having only the vaguest of plans to write the third instalment at some point years from now.
It is rare for a sequel to be able to elevate or even match the quality of the first book. But this does. The first book gave us the twist, the sequel kept me engaged despite that.
This book asks you to examine what loyalty means, and who you owe it to
