I'm not a historian, but I'm certain that Prévost wrote it thinking it would be a marvelous tale that would warn people about the risks of walking away from Church -yet people stayed for its drama and gossip-driven quality. Just another Monday for them, tbh. It's a shitshow where nobody is loveable, and that is its main strenght.
