    Author Appreciation

I just want to express an appreciation for how well P Djeli Clark writes women characters 💕 Siti, Fatma, and Hadia feel real and have distinctive personalities. I would have guessed that the author is a woman if I hadn't looked him up!

Although I struggled with some of the more violent descriptions throughout the book, I will say this book pleasantly surprised me. Thank goodness for this reading challenge because I never would have picked this book for myself — yet I can confidently say it was worth it! I definitely recommend listening to the audiobook because that narrator SOLD me.

Thoughts from 1% (Regarding the Short Stories/Novellas)

For those wanting to read the book unsure if they need to read the short stories/novellas:

I read all three before tackling the book (Dead Djinn in Cairo, The Angel of Khan-El-Khalili, The Haunting of Tram Car 015). It's definitely not necessary to read them, but I highly recommend it. Events and characters from those stories are referenced and show up. The book does a great job giving you all the context you could possibly need, so you definitely won't be fully lost or anything. But having read the three short stories enriches the book a lot, and gives just a little more depth, context and vibrance to everything. This is especially true for Dead Djinn In Cairo.

TL;DR: The short stories aren't required, but 100% recommended. They're very short, quick reads, too.

EDIT: slightly amending this to note that "Dead Djinn" actually becomes VERY relevant.
