Wow, what a powerful first read to start off Women's Month. It's got me feeling sad and angry and grieving for myself and all my fellow women out there who continue to live under an oppressive patriarchal and capitalist society that only serve to uplift men. May this be a reminder that we must draw strength from other women because there's nothing in the world as powerful as female rage, especially when it's collective. I hope I live long enough to see the day women free themselves from the shackles of patriarchy.
Completely unrelated to the story but this was the first book I read that wasn't in my TBR or Interested shelves. It's something that completely would have missed my radar if it weren't for Pagebound and this readalong and I ended up loving it 🥹 Thank you for your life Pagebound!
Not sure if this will reach the 5 Filipinos here on Pagebound so I might as well be shouting into the void but I just want to share my haul from this year's PBF because I kind of went crazy on the spending 🫣 These spaces are kind of a big deal because it's really hard to source for local books here in the Philippines unless you know your sources. Big book shops mostly carry international titles since they're trendy and therefore make them money so their shelves for local books are usually limited and very not curated.
My absolute favorites from this haul are these two comic books both from the same indie publisher. One is sapphic made by and for queer women while the other is written and illustrated by a student-artist who's also an activist and sheds light on the basic Marxist principles and how it applies to the struggles of a common Filipino.
The rest have really promising blurbs! From Philippine historical fiction, feminist fiction anchored specifically on struggles of the modern Filipina women, toxic yuri to an alternate fantasy universe where the Philippines is a superpower country, they're all pretty diverse so I'm really excited to start on these in the coming weeks 🥹
