I think I'm late on this news. I just recently found out that AI companies are buying old and rare books to scan and feed them to AI and then destroy the physicalcopies after.
I understand that scanning books can make them more accessible but destroying is completely unnecessary to me. Maybe I'm just overly reacting about this, but the idea genuinely makes me sad :(( plus, there are other ways to digitize a book.
And tbh, I'm really just against this regardless of whether they flaim it's for preservation or whatnot because,

I don't like the idea of feeding AI information, especially when people, particularly future generations, could become increasingly reliant on it.

AI can mimic the writing styles of authors, and I'm personally not comfortable with that either.
- I don't believe AI is the "future", at least not as far as creation goes. The future we envision is one where humans remain at the heart of what we create. I don't want us to reach a point where everything is generated, and creativity becomes something we simply consume rather than something we participate in.
I've seen people agree with this process but I'm curious about your take on this. Would you be okqy with a book being destroyed if it means being preserved digitally?
