This book really makes me want to open a bookshop/cafe, but one that’s open til late at night. I have a lot of fond childhood memories roaming the aisles of Barnes and Noble past 10pm since they would always be open til 11. Now everything closes at 8 or 9 and it just isn’t the same. Can you imagine a cozy late night bookshop? 😭

A surprising new favorite! Even a top 5 contender. I heard it had been inaccurately marketed more as a thriller/murder mystery, so had went in with zero expectations.
The first 20 pages or so were hard for me to get into, and felt awkward and lacking flow. Not sure if it was a translation issue, but once I got past that part it seemed to find legs and was hard to put down.
This type of book is exactly what I LOVE. Imperfect humans, and digging deep into someone’s path to understand them and their decisions better. There’s so much about it that feels incredibly profound, and it’s one I will have to do some more deep thinking about after the work day. I love that there really isn’t a purely good or bad person, but it’s just multifaceted complicated people just trying to get through life.
One big takeaway was how food can play such an important role and tell so much about a person. Everything was also described so deliciously that I definitely dropped everything to cook and eat immediately. Butter will be savored, and I’ll appreciate the nourishing goodness more.
It ended up being more of a thriller than I expected, even though it was a slow burn. After the halfway mark things pick up speed and the tension turned up.
I recommend going in with zero expectations, but maybe having a pack of butter, soy sauce and some rice handy 😆.
